LATTERIA DI LIVIGNO

Our history

Still in 2023, Latteria di Livigno offers its products to all Livigno citizens and tourists who want to taste real alpine milk and its related products.

1954

The beginning

Latteria was founded in 1954 as a rotating dairy, latteria turnaria. The farmers took turns collecting milk and processing it to produce butter and cheese.

In 1977, thanks to the belief of a small number of farmers, the company became Latteria Agricola Cooperativa, around which the whole rural activity of Livigno revolves. Later on, alongside the main activity of milk collection and processing, the Municipality of Livigno entrusted the Cooperative with the management of the Municipal Agricultural Plan, including the supervision of the alpine pastures, the assignment of subsidies for the conservation and maintenance of the territory, and the economic support for agricultural activity.

2003

The Project

After 25 years, in which the headquarters and the processing laboratory were located in the centre of the village, in 2003 the project for the new tourist dairy was started.

2006

The Tourist Dairy

After the beginning of the construction in May 2005, the new Tourist Dairy took shape, and started its new production activity on 6th July 2006.
In this building, the Cooperative’s administrators wanted to combine in the best possible way the two elements that always held up our valley, that is to say agriculture and tourism, which represent the fundamental resource for the development of Livigno’s community.

TODAY

Latteria di Livigno

Up to just over 50 years ago, the Livigno valley was completely isolated during the winter period.
Until that time, the basis of subsistence for the inhabitants of our valley was livestock products: meat, wool, and especially milk. Reaching on foot to neighbouring Switzerland or Valtellina, butter and cheese were exchanged for other essential goods, such as flour and salt.
Since ancient times, cheese and butter have been the mainstays of the economy in this Alpine village, one of the highest in Europe.
Still in 2023, Latteria di Livigno offers its products to all Livigno citizens and tourists who want to taste real alpine milk and its related products.
